“Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place.” -Henri Nouwen
What is spiritual direction?
Spiritual direction involves inviting another person into your journey towards wholeness. It can be quite hard to describe without having experienced it. In my experience, the spiritual director does not prescribe a direction, but at the end of the session I always seem to have a clearer direction to go in.
It can be a wonderful companion to counseling or coaching, as it has a slightly different goal. The goal is not to produce a specific outcome or behavior change, but rather to create a space for deep listening, noticing patterns, and welcoming direction from the directee’s source for wisdom, whether it is named as God, Spirit, Love, Source, etc.
Spiritual direction is for people of all ages and backgrounds. My training covered many topics including grief, LGBTQIA+, nature-based spirituality, secular spirituality, addiction, co-dependency, sexuality, sexual abuse, and mental health/depression.
